Pictou 2023 Celebration Series Announced for Pictou Waterfront.
Updated: Jun 13
Over 40 Complimentary Shows!
The Pictou waterfront is set to come alive with over 50 events and performances between July 1st and September 17th. This exciting series of events is a collaboration between the deCoste Performing Arts Centre, the Town of Pictou, the Hector Heritage Quay, the Pictou Lobster Carnival, and other community partners. 27 Creighton Street, Pictou will be transformed into an exciting waterfront event site, with an 8,000 square foot, 300-seat, 'Caladh Marquee' stage as its centrepiece. Complementing the stage will be a vendor’s village, play structures, art installations, a variety of seating options, fire pits and public washrooms along the harbour’s edge.
The Celebration Series is a major element of year-long Pictou 2023 festivities celebrating the Town of Pictou's 150th anniversary, the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Ship Hector, and the deCoste's 40th anniversary. “This is a wonderful example of what is possible through community partnering, with strategic support from many departments and agencies of government. There is no doubt that Pictou is in an exciting growth stage. In 5 years, our community will look much different, and we will remember Pictou 2023 as the turning point. This will be memorable summer and help position us as a major tourism destination,” shares Mayor Jim Ryan.
As highlights of the summer-long series, the deCoste is producing two signature 40th Anniversary events that will have a fee: July 5th – The Barra MacNeils, and August 2nd, Yours Truly Cape Breton with Bette, Maynard and cast, and one additional concert labelled a “Ship Hector 250” event on September 2nd, which is the Friends of Fleur Concert, a gathering of her musical friends to salute her music and life. “In addition to these signature shows, we have secured partnerships and funding to bring over 40 shows to the stage with no admission fee being charged. With a historical and cultural celebration on this scale, it is essential that the whole community can participate barrier-free,” shares deCoste Executive Director, Troy Greencorn.
Events are planned for virtually every day in July and August, with events stretching into September, ending with Hector 250 celebrations. The concerts will showcase an impressive lineup of local, regional, and national artists from a diverse range of genres as well. Much more than music, the series features magic, historical theatre, pipe bands and much more. "We welcome the whole region to join us on the waterfront at the Caladh Marquee and Marina Stage for these exciting and diverse shows, as we continue to celebrate Pictou 2023. Downtown Pictou is ready to welcome visitors with a great selection of shops, galleries, and restaurants,” shared Michelle Young, Chair of the Pictou 2023 Committee.
Tickets for deCoste signature shows go on sale Monday, May 29th at 10:00 am and tickets for complimentary shows can be arranged starting June 5th, also at 10:00 am. For all shows hosted at the Caladh Marquee, a ticket is required for access to the tented area. Tickets can be obtained online at decostecentre.ca and via phone or visit to the deCoste office (902-485-8848 – 25B Front Street, Pictou). Performances at the Marina Stage will not require a ticket, and it is recommended for audience members to bring their own seating.
Celebrations to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Ship Hector’s arrival in Pictou take place September 15th-17th, capping off an incredible summer series. Planned activities include a sailing regatta, Bluenose II deck tours, the original musical "The Voyage," Gaelic and Indigenous culture and music, the Hector Ceilidh, and the Hector Tattoo. Visitors can also witness the restoration progress on the Hector, stepping aboard the ship and experiencing its historical significance firsthand.
